5 Reasons to Run a Virtual 5k

Have you always wanted to run a 5k, but for one reason or another, keep putting off that goal? A virtual race can offer a point of entry, even for those with a lot of doubts about running.

Virtual races are more common these days, especially due to precautions for COVID-19. So, what is the difference between an in-person race and a virtual race?

Virtual races are run on your own terms, on your course (or treadmill) of choice, and at a time of your choosing.

Here are 5 reasons to run a virtual 5k

1. Dip your toe into race waters.

Do in-person races sound a little intimidating? I hear that. Maybe you haven’t participated in a race before, and you have some concerns about getting to the race start and race day etiquette. A virtual race is the perfect place to start.

2. Keep safe.

You’ve seen it in the news. I’ve seen it as a practicing physician. The COVID-19 numbers are up. Many of us have concerns about gathering together. Running a race virtually allows you to continue to run in your zone of what feels safe - maybe in your neighborhood, on your treadmill at home, with those inside your bubble.

3. Challenge yourself.

Maybe running a 5k is something you’ve wanted to try for a long while. Or, maybe you’ve run races in the past but haven’t in awhile and want to get back out there. Either way, running a 5k may be outside of your comfort zone. I am here to encourage us outside of our comfort zones, because that’s where all the fun stuff happens.

4. Community.

With the challenges of the last year and a half, many of us have felt isolated. With many in-person races crossed off the calendar, I have personally missed my running community. A virtual race provides the chance to rally around the common goal of the race experience. We can support each other while leading up to the race, and encourage our families and friends to participate in this experience with us.

5. Give back.

Many virtual races are linked up as a charity partner with a variety of organizations who do so much good in the world. Part of the race proceeds may be donated to the charity, and there is often an option to give an added donation to the charity upon registration.

I want to invite you to join me at the Mindful Marathon Virtual 5k! You are welcome at the starting line, and you belong there.

Come join us this fall, and sign up HERE. It’s going to be awesome!

Imagine stepping out of your comfort zone and having a race experience on your own terms. See you there!
