Start Thanksgiving off with a run!
At races, the best in the sport line up with you and me, the recreational runner, at the same start line. You’ve got every pace, from those who run faster than a 5 minute mile, to those who jog or walk a 20 minute mile, plus everyone in between, all given the same chance to take off from the same spot and to cover the same distance. This is pretty awesome, and evokes a sense of gratitude, to follow in the literal footsteps of these amazingly accomplished runners.
We can also experience gratitude when we hear the many inspiring stories from each other. I make it a habit to talk to runners at packet pickup for the race bib, while waiting in line for the port-a-potty on race morning, and while standing at the start line. Each of us has his or her own running story, and each story inspires.
With Thanksgiving upon us, let us be thankful for the Turkey Trot! They are the most popular races in America, with nearly one million people taking part in the fun. What an encouraging statistic! We come together to enjoy a Thanksgiving morning run or walk, preparing ourselves to show up as our best possible selves for the rest of the day. (It’s not too late to sign up for one, or you can make your own Turkey Trot around the neighborhood!)
Wherever we are in our running and fitness journey, let’s be grateful to be right where we are. When we show up for our next training run, let’s be grateful to be there too, even if and when a workout doesn’t go as well as planned. At our next race, maybe at that Turkey Trot tomorrow, let’s talk to each other while standing at the start line and after we cross the finish, exchange our running stories, and take a moment to be grateful for the ability and the opportunity to run together.
Happy Thanksgiving!
