Are Sneakers Your Rate Limiting Step?

The pandemic, social distancing, teleworking, and generally being confined to our homes, has caused many individuals to take up running. In recent weeks, with our local shops and malls closed, some of my athletes have reached out to ask what to do about shoes, especially if they are just starting out.

Normally, I recommend that my new runners go to the local running store for a proper fitting. Unfortunately, we can't quite do that now, but don’t let this deter you from getting out and onto the pavement. This week, we discuss some practical pandemic running sneaker advice.

1 - Check your closet.

What kind of sneakers do you already have? They are probably going to be just fine in the short term. Unless your feet have grown substantially, I’d vote for rolling with what we’ve got in the closet already.

2- Virtual fitting.

Some stores are doing virtual fittings. This is a fabulous idea. The discussion that would normally take place in the store can be done over the phone or computer. As an example, one of our local stores in Philadelphia has an online signup form to schedule a virtual fitting. You can find out more info here: Philadelphia Runner

3 - Try before you buy.

Find an online retailer with a decent return policy. Many online shops will allow you to try before you buy. Consider purchasing more than one pair to try in the comfort of your home, and return the ones that don't work well for you.

Let's do what we can with what we've got. Let’s not make sneakers our rate limiting step.

I’m excited to see the sneakers that are dug up from the depths of your closet...
